What is Reiki?

Reiki can seem like a confusing, complex term. Many people have heard of it, but few know what it actually entails or means to them. The exciting part here is that Reiki is actually a very basic principle and an easy to grasp concept. Reiki energy can be a very powerful tool on the path to one’s healing.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a life-force energy discovered by Mikao Usui-Sensei in the early 1900s in Japan. After using reiki to heal many harmed in a large earthquake in Tokyo in 1923, Usui-Sensei realized he could not heal everyone himself and would need to train others in this energy healing modality. As time went on, other Reiki Masters modified the way they practiced and taught Reiki healing. No matter which form of Reiki you receive, it is all still Reiki and will affect you in the same way.

When Reiki is practiced, the practitioner channels the “life-force energy” from the universe through their hands to the locations on your body where you may be out of balance or energy may feel “stuck”. Reiki energy helps rebalance the body energetically, increase the person’s vibrations, and promote the body’s natural healing processes. It is important to understand that the practitioner is not doing any healing themselves, but rather enabling you and your body to connect with this energy and heal itself. Reiki helps shift the body’s own energy so that it reaches realignment to where it should be naturally, and this results in physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.

Understanding How Energy Healing Works

When it comes to energy healing we first need to dig a little deeper into what we are made of and what gives us life. First it is important to understand that everything is made up of matter. Matter is the smallest, physical unit of anything that takes up any amount of space. Then we have to understand that all matter is made up of energy. Energy cannot be measured, as it is too small to take up space. However it is what gives the vibrational structure to every piece of matter in the universe.

Many people may already be familiar with the concept that we are all made of energy because they have heard of Chi in Chinese Medicine. Chi refers to life force energy, this is the energy that connects mind, body, and spirit. Whatever you choose to call it or think of it as, we are made up of both a physical body (which also contains energy) as well as an energy body. This energy body extends out as far as your fingertips and has a vibrational frequency and aura that changes depending on your current emotional, physical, and spiritual states.

When our energy is flowing easily and naturally through our body, we feel healthy, happy and energetic. However when our energy becomes blocked, out of balance or disconnected from high vibrations for too long, it can lead to physical, emotional and mental health issues. It is important to keep energy flowing properly so it can communicate between the healing centers of the body so we can avoid issues such as pain, illness, depression and anxiety.

Another key part of our energy bodies are our chakras. Chakras are our body’s energy centers and when out of balance can cause emotional and/or physical symptoms. These disruptions can come from stored energy resulting from emotions, memories and beliefs. In most cases imbalances appear on the energetic level before they manifest on the physical level. This is why energy healing can be such a great preventative tool when it comes to overall health. Keeping our energetic body in alignment can be a great way to prevent disease and illness from occurring on the physical plane.

Reiki works by balancing and increasing the flow of energy throughout our body. This balance and flow helps to prevent physical illness while also giving your body the tools needed to heal itself from already present disease or discomfort. The biggest thing to understand about reiki and healing is that our bodies already want to be in balance and already have the energy to heal. Reiki works to balance that energy so that our bodies can redirect it to healing rather than disease.

When giving Reiki, a practitioner uses their hands to channel the external Reiki energy and redirect it into the recipient's body. When this energy is flowing through the practitioner’s hands into the recipient's body, it does not necessarily matter where the hands are placed as the energy flows to wherever it is needed in the body. It is important to understand that the energy being directed and received is not the personal energy of the practitioner, but rather life force energy from the universe being channeled through their hands. The practitioner acts as an aid in the healing process but ultimately it is the client’s own body that decides what it is ready to release and how it wants to heal.

One thing that makes Reiki unique is that once a practitioner is attuned to be in direct contact with the universal life force energy, they are connected with that energy forever. This process is called an attunement and occurs when a Reiki Master transfers the ability to perform Reiki to a new practitioner.

What can Reiki help with?

Reiki healing can be a great way to help with any issues on an emotional, spiritual or physical plane. Reiki can be used to address a broad range of issues such as pain, stress, negative energy, emotional blocks, anxiety, depression, anger or grief. Reiki can also be a great tool when working through past trauma as well as in rebalancing chakras, raising your vibration, increasing positive energy in life and improving personal growth. It can also be particularly helpful with chronic health problems and mystery illnesses as well as when overcoming emotional blocks or when caught in a sympathetic state.

What can I expect a Reiki session to be like?

As mentioned before, Reiki can be performed in many different ways but all will be somewhat similar. To begin, you will be laying down usually on a massage table. The setting should be relaxed and you will be allowed to close your eyes if you so wish. The most important part is that you are relaxed and open to receiving this healing energy. Next the practitioner will place their hands on or directly over different areas of your body, holding still in each position for a few minutes, while they transfer the universal life force energy to your body. Some positions may be held longer than others based on the intuition of the practitioner, however these positions are not overly important as the energy will flow wherever it needs to go.

There may be more or less parts to a Reiki session, but the main focus is on balancing the chakras. This usually begins with a full body aura scan to help clear stagnant energy and give the practitioner a reading on any specific areas that may be out of balance. Sometimes the practitioner may mention something that comes up during the session, such as something they noticed, felt or saw when working on your energy centers. At the end of the session the practitioner should go over which chakras were out of balance and recommendations for how to keep them in balance.

Reiki is traditionally performed in person, but can also be performed over distance. The session is equally as powerful and effective in either scenario. In a distance session, the client will simply lay down in a quiet area, as they would in person, at the set time, and relaxes while the practitioner performs the Reiki via distance.

What does Reiki feel like?

Reiki can have many different effects depending on each person and each individual session. The most common experience is to have a strong emotional response. This could include crying without knowing why or feeling strong emotions such as anger, sadness or joy. Another common experience is to feel strong heat or cold in certain parts of your body, depending on energy flow.

It is also possible to not feel anything too noticeable during your Reiki session. It does not matter whether or not you notice anything during the session, you are still receiving Reiki and it is still working in the body. Many people can be under the impression that they need to notice something physically in order to have truly received the Reiki but that is not the case when it comes to energy healing.

What can I expect after a Reiki session?

Reiki helps trigger an energetic detox which can manifest in physical terms as well. This may appear as detoxification symptoms or fatigue. You may sleep very hard that night or not be able to sleep well at all. Some clients may even leave the session feeling especially energized.

Emotionally, most people leave a session with an extra sense of happiness and calm. However if you are still processing emotions from the session, you may feel the need to release sadness or anger. Each person’s response will be unique to them and their session.

Whatever your response may be, it is important to take it easy and be gentle with your body and your mind for the rest of the day following the session. Make time to rest and drink plenty or water after your session, while also limiting your to do list.

Energy healing can be an important part on any healing journey, especially if you feel you have been doing “everything right” but are still not seeing the improvements you are wanting. Sometimes all we need is a little energetic push so we can find balance and allow the body’s natural healing processes to begin working again properly. And on the plus side, unlike other healing modalities, there are no downsides to receiving Reiki.
